Portage coach Marty Slanoc: “Marion Center is a tough team, and they ran a lot of different looks. This hurt the Stingers overall, as both teams were nearly even in offensive scrimmage yards, with Portage getting a 365-364 edge. Most vital statistic(s): Marion Center committed nine penalties totaling 92 yards, including four personal fouls. Late in the fourth quarter, the 6-foot-3 sophomore stopped Marion Center near the goal line by forcing an incomplete pass on fourth down, preserving Portage’s two-score lead at that point. Layo tallied three receptions for 90 yards. Unsung hero(es): Layo also made an impact for the Mustangs offensively, catching all three of Miko’s touchdown passes. Miko was also 6-for-6 in kicking extra points. Player of the game: Portage quarterback Andrew Miko completed 6-of-11 passes for 114 yards and three touchdowns, while carrying the ball four times for 111 yards and another score, including a 90-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Bode Layo picked up the loose ball and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown, putting Portage ahead 21-10 and giving the Mustangs the momentum for the remainder of the contest. Play of the game: With 5:52 remaining in the first half, Portage defensive lineman Keaton Troxell sacked Marion Center quarterback Drew Runk from behind, forcing a fumble.
